South Island, New Zealand

To me, nothing is better than travel. On the road means a lot to me. It means me time. It means learning. It means some of the best time I shared with my friends or loved ones.

Replacing my old laptop gave me an opportunity to reorganise my files. Something I probably should have done long time ago. Among all the files, there are a lot of old photo files. I forgot how much I love looking at my trip photos. Actually I haven’t forgotten. I just haven’t had a lot of time to do it. Excuses, excuses, and more excuses……

We moved from NZ to Australia over 5 years ago. Whenever someone asked me about travelling to NZ, I always recommend south island. It’s truly beautiful in every season. In this post, I just want to share with you a trip I took with some friends to south island in a winter many years ago. Please bear in mind these photos were taken more than 5 years ago. The quality is not as good as these days.

We took a road trip to south island back then. Wherever we stopped, we awed by the breathtaking views. We even encountered a Kea who was trying to get into our car window and looking for food. If I visit south island again, I would not hesitate a second to take another road trip.

If I remember correctly, we went to Arrow town, Invercargill, Bluff, Milford sounds and Queenstown. I will not put any travel info here since it’s definitely outdated. Plus, I don’t remember the exact itinerary anymore.  If you travel to Invercargill, you would want to take a quick look at Bluff. Invercargill is probably the southernmost city in NZ, while Bluff is the southernmost town (exclude Stewart Island).

Taking a cruise to see Milford Sound is a must! It offers the most stunning scenery, beautiful waterfall and mountains. If you are lucky, you can spot some seals resting on the rocks.

I don’t think anyone would skip Queenstown if they visit south island of New Zealand. Every time I go there, I am impressed by how beautiful this little town is. Apart from the beautiful views, it has a lot to offer, hiking, skiing and snowboarding in winter, Golf, fishing and more.

Have you been to New Zealand? How do you like the south island? 🙂

    • Yes, I am. 🙂 New Zealand is really beautiful, especially south island. You definitely should go for a visit. I have been to south island twice. I want to go one more time because I really want to do the glacier hiking there.

  2. Gorgeous, Jen. The South Island is truly a special place. The first time I saw the Milford Sound I was a little emotional. So much beauty. It made me feel very proud to be a New Zealander.

  4. I would recommend south island as well…I spent around 2-3months travelling around the south island last year and I can tell you that it’s probably just as awesome as you remember it from 5 years ago..although perhaps less tourists, maybe? Haha 😄
