Banitsa with Spinch

When I visited Bulgaria with my husband, I tried banitsa for the first time. It’s a traditional breakfast in Bulgaria. I have heard there are more than 50 versions of banitsa. It could be savoury or sweet. It could be meaty or vegetarian. However, the basic one is made from fillo pastry, feta and eggs. Normally, there are two ways of making it. The easiest way is to layer the fillo pastry and the filling. The alternative is to wrap the filling inside of the fillo and arrange the pastry in a circular pattern. Either way, the result is always good. The banitsa I had in Bulgaria was always very oily. It was way too much oil for my liking. Traditionally, it is made from butter which makes it so delicious. However, I am trying not to have too much butter at the moment. This time, I chose an olive oil only version with spinach and mint. I love the extra flavour from the spinach. Together with feta, it tastes so good. Also, I made it with …

Sweet Red Bean Steamed Buns (Dou Sha Bao)

We all have our own way to remember the one we loved, the one we lost, the one we would like to spend more time with but no more chances. I pretty much grew up with my granny. My parents were both working. Granny was the one fed me, walked me to school, taught me things, and cared for me. She passed away many years ago. I never forget her smile, the stories she told me, and the taste of her food. Chinese New Year is just five days away. It’s a festival for family, and I really really miss her. I always loved the red bean buns made by granny. She made them so delicious but light. I ate tons of it when I was a kid. I loved them as my breakfast before school or a snack after school. She always made the red bean paste at home. I started doing the same thing these days. You can buy bean paste in any Asian supermarket I reckon. However, I found the paste I get from the …

Muji Cleansing Oil (sensitive skin)|Review

I am always a fan of cleansing oil. One of the reasons is that I have dry skin. I also like the idea of cleaning and massaging the skin at the same time. Last year, when I was visiting my parents in Shanghai, I ran out of makeup cleanser. One day, I went shopping with my friend in Muji. I saw this cleansing oil for sensitive skin. Out of curiosity, I wanted to try it since I love both Shu Uemura and DHC cleansing oil. I guess everyone knows about Muji these days. A lot of people rave about their storage products. Personally, I think they are pretty expensive. You probably can find a much cheaper version in Daiso. Well, certainly, not everything. Anyway, it’s just me. I don’t remember the price I paid for this bottle since it has been a while. I heard it’s about AUD20 in Australia. Please correct me if I’m wrong. It’s a 200ml Cleansing oil for sensitive skin. From the photo, you can see that I have almost finished it. …

Olive Bread

Do you love olives? I am a big fan. I never miss my opportunity to add olives in my cooking or baking. I love olive bread (since it has olives in it!). It always smells so good. The aroma is so alluring that I can’t stop eating it. I made this one in a quiet afternoon. Sipping my coffee while I was cutting the onion and frying it to soften it. When I was waiting for the onions to cool down, I chopped the coriander, parsley, and olives. The rest is easy peasy. Combine all the ingredients together and make a dough in a mixing bowl. Then, knead for a while. Let it rise, and bake! When the bread is baked and cooled. I served the slices with some fresh salad and prosciutto. It goes well with fish dip too. Yum…  🙂 INGREDIENTS Red onion – 1, sliced Olive oil – 1 tbsp, to cook the onion Bread flour – 440-450 g Pitted black olives – 80 g Baby caper – 20 g Salt – 1 tsp Dried …

Mango Coconut sticky rice

Mango has been one of my favourite fruits in summer. Lucky us, the summer is the mango season here in Australia. We like to buy mango in a tray which contains 20-25 mangoes. I will store them in my fridge. Then, it’s time to enjoy the heavenly fruit in different ways. I would make smoothies, ice cream, desserts from mangoes. The results are always good with minimum effort. I love mango rice. I remember I tried it for the first time in a Thai restaurant. The combination of coconut and mango flavours are beyond delicious. The texture of the glutinous rice is so lovely. I started to create a simple version of the mango rice at home.  Since it’s the mango season now. I certainly wouldn’t miss the opprotunity to make some mango rice at home. I hope you will like and enjoy this simple recipe. INGREDIENTS Glutinous rice  – 200g Coconut milk – 200ml Caster sugar – 2 1/2 teaspoons salt – 3/4 teaspoons corn starch – a pinch mango – 1 roasted …

A new leaf

Hello everyone. Happy New Year! I wish you all had a fun, joyful and safe New Year! Look back. I certainly had up and down in 2016. However, it’s part of my life experience and certainly part of me. So, thank you to my 2016! I am looking forward to my 2017. It’s time of the year to make New Year’s resolutions. I have quite a long list. My New Year’s resolutions are more like a very specific To Do list. I find it works much better this way for me when I try to meet my goals. Instead of “do more exercises”, I put “30 minutes workout everyday” on my list. I also have a list of book to read in 2017. It’s much easier to achieve than just “read more”. Anyway, I don’t really want to bore you with my long resolution list. I actually want to share some apps that helped me to achieve some of my goals last year in this post. I certainly have a lot of apps on my phone. …
